Experience the BMW E28: Drive Back in Time

Step into 1980s Bavaria with the iconic BMW E28. Often hailed as one of the most handsome cars of the 1980s, the E28 offers a driver-focused experience that still thrills today. Its design is distinctly retro – from the shark-nosed front and quad headlights that give it an aggressive stance, to the analog dashboard lighting up with a soft red glow. The E28 model (produced 1981–1988) was built in an era before touchscreens and driver aids, which means you get pure mechanical feedback. Picture this: the solid thunk of the door closing, the smell of aged leather and gasoline, and the responsive straight-six engine coming to life. Every drive in an E28 is a journey back in time, yet somehow it never feels outdated.

This classic reminds us why BMW earned the slogan “The Ultimate Driving Machine” – it’s engaging, balanced, and built to be driven.

Why the E28 Still Matters: Beyond nostalgia, the E28 encapsulates what driving enthusiasts cherish. It was a business sedan with the soul of a sports car – a fun yet usable classic that stood as a more driver-centric alternative to its contemporaries. In fact, the E28 gave birth to a legend: the first-ever BMW M5 was an E28 variant launched in 1985, a car that founded the high-performance sedan class and became the archetype for all “supersaloons” to follow. Owning or aspiring to own an E28 today isn’t just about having a beautiful vintage car in your garage; it’s about experiencing a piece of automotive evolution that still inspires modern designs.

The Joys of Vintage BMW Ownership

Why do vintage BMWs spark so much joy? Because they offer an experience modern cars can’t. With its analog charm, you feel every gear shift and hear each mechanical note, becoming one with the machine in a way new cars can’t replicate. Owning a vintage BMW – whether it’s an E28 5 Series or another classic model – means immersing yourself in a rich tapestry of sights, sounds, and sensations: the tactile click of an old switch, the straight-line acceleration without electronic nannies, the proud BMW roundel emblem reminding you of decades of engineering excellence.

But it’s not just about the car – it’s about community. These classic BMWs have a way of bringing people together – be it the hunt for a rare part, swapping restoration tips in the garage, or admiring each other’s cars at weekend meets. When you become a vintage BMW owner, you join a global family of passionate collectors, tinkerers, and storytellers. Liberty MotorWerks is built to celebrate that camaraderie. We encourage knowledge-sharing, from seasoned veterans guiding newcomers, to fans swapping road trip stories. The joy of ownership comes from both the personal thrills (that early morning drive on an open road) and the shared experiences (the friendly nod from a fellow classic BMW driver). Our mission is to amplify those joys by keeping you informed, inspired, and connected.

Featured Classics Showcase

While the BMW E28 is our star and starting point, Liberty MotorWerks celebrates all vintage BMWs that capture our imagination. On our homepage, you’ll find a rotating showcase of featured cars – complete with photos, specs, and backstories. Here’s a taste of what you might see in the fleet:

  • BMW E28 5 Series – The cornerstone of our site. From the humble 518i to the roaring M5, we highlight various E28 models, their key features, and what makes them beloved. The E28’s blend of timeless styling and engaging driving dynamics makes it a favorite of many, including us.
  • BMW E36/7 Z Series – Known as the Z3, this classic took two halves of the 3 series (E36 front and E30 rear), merged them together, and gave us an iconic roadster. This was the first model to be solely manufactured outside Germany. A BMW you know was proudly made in Greer, South Carolina, USA. (James Bond’s included)
  • BMW F-15 X Series – The X series grew from BMW’s realization that the upcoming “new” trend of the late 1990’s was not about going off road, over the river and through the woods, maybe, but on the road. BMW answered this call in 1999 with the X5. Originally mocked about its inability to climb a wet, grassy hill, the X series ushered in a new class of vehicles that are now known as the SUV – lovingly known to us as Beatrix, or the spaceship…

Other friends we may comment on but don’t have in the fleet:

  • BMW E30 3 Series – The classic compact sport sedan/coupe that shared the roads with the E28. Renowned for its nimble handling and motorsport pedigree (hello, M3), the E30 may appear in our stories as we expand. It’s another example of 1980s BMW brilliance that we can’t ignore.
  • BMW E24 6 Series – The shark-nosed big brother, a grand tourer with stunning lines. We’re eager to delve into the E24’s tales of luxury and performance, and how it complements the E28 era.
  • (…and more to come!) Our garage is always growing. As Liberty MotorWerks evolves, expect to see more models (old and maybe slightly newer) pop up. Every classic Bimmer has a story, and we plan to tell as many as we can.

Each featured car on our homepage links to deeper content – be it a blog post, a buyer’s guide, or a photo gallery. It’s our way of sharing the spotlight with the entire vintage BMW family, while still keeping the E28 as our proud focal point. If you have a suggestion for a model you’d love to see, let us know!

All our support content is presented in a professional, respectful manner. We love these cars as much as you do, and we know how important it is to share correct information. If we don’t know an answer, we’ll say so and help research it, maintaining transparency and trust. Our commitment is to keep these classics on the road and thriving, one helpful post at a time.

Our commitment is to the community and the cars. Liberty MotorWerks is built by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts.
